Wall of Fame: the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge

Since 2021, we have been organising the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge. Our goal: to accelerate the transition to a laboratory animal-free world by helping researchers scale their innovative models commercially.

Discover the inspiring winners below, watch exclusive behind-the-scenes videos and see how together we are changing the future of scientific research.

What is the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge?

In the Netherlands, a lot of animal-free research is done, but only a small part finds its way into practice. This is because researchers often lack experience and knowledge on how to scale up their innovation and bring it to market. The Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge helps researchers with:

  • intensive bootcamps, coaching by experts
  • strong network
  • support teams in setting up a successful start-up.

The winners of the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge

HelloR&D (2024)

HelloR&D is developing organoids made up of the main cell type in the liver that will allow researchers to predict the effect that drugs have on the liver.

VEO (2023)

VEO develops human organoids of the respiratory tract, intestinal tract and brain to study the infection of human viruses in their natural environment.

Anya Biotech (2022)

Anya Biotech is developing models of human heart cells, allowing them to develop human-targeted drugs for heart disease.

Avatar Zoo (2021)

Avatar Zoo develops several virtual reality models of animals that can be used for veterinary anatomy lessons and skills practice.

The impact of the challenge

With the help of the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge, animal-free models can move from development to real application. That way, they can contribute even better to a world without test animals.

Bringing innovative and animal-free techniques to the market is a complex challenge, especially for scientists without entrepreneurial experience. This is why we created the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge. This programme, organised since 2021 and co-sponsored by Stichting Universitas since 2022, provides scientists with the guidance and expertise needed to turn their ideas into successful business cases. In collaboration with the experienced GameChanger Challenge, we help them start or further develop their businesses.

This way, we not only accelerate the validation and implementation of animal-free innovations, but also increase their impact, making these techniques available faster and contributing to the reduction of animal testing.

Dr Harsha Devalla of Anya Biotech, the winning team of the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge 2022 says: ‘Participation in this programme has given us a strong foundation for translating our state-of-the-art science into a successful biotech venture. We look forward to taking it further.’

News of our participants

  • Avatar Zoo is already applied at Utrecht University (Participant 2021)
  • InSteps and chiron have launched their own websites (Participants 2022)
  • Giulia Moreni of team VEO won the prestigious Hugo van Poelgeest Award 2024 in addition to the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge 2023.

Indi Joore of Hello R&D, the winning team of the Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge 2024 says: ‘We were able to further develop our liver model to better predict the liver toxicity of new drugs in development without animal testing. Moreover, we got this technology to companies to turn this into action as well.’
